My online bulletin board. A place to post things I find groovy, or to ask questions of the masses. Kinda like a flea market, you never really know what you'll find but on a good day you should find something interesting, if not also of value.

Swallow this one

At the Monkey Rampant performance Wednesday night, I had to have a bottle of water as a prop for one of our sketches. "Okay," I thought, "I'll just pick one up at the party store..." So I did. Two something dollars later, I had a one liter bottle of Dasani water. And I was off.

At the show, a young man told me that Dasani water, owned by the Coca-Cola company adds Magnesium Sulfate to their water. Later I discovered that they also add potassium chloride and salt. Now why is there any reason to add such goo to what is perfect already?

So I went to the Dasani website to see what they had to say:

THE PURIFICATION PROCESS USED TO MAKE DASANI REMOVES
VIRTUALLY ALL MINERALS AND IMPURITIES FROM THE WATER. BUT IN TASTE TESTS, PEOPLE PREFERRED DASANI WHEN EXTREMELY SMALL AMOUNTS OF MINERALS WERE ADDED. HOW SMALL? SO SMALL THAT THE FDA CONSIDERS THEM ALL, INCLUDING THE SODIUM, TO BE NUTRITIONALLY INSIGNIFICANT

Okay, they know about it. And it seems to be a fine justification, doesn't it? It would, unless you know what Magnesium Sulfate does. It bonds with the water molecules and in doing so becomes indigestible. In other words, your body can no longer process the water ingested. It passes right through you, leaving your thirst unquenched and your pocket "two-something" dollars short. So you buy another bottle...and the whole thing happens again.

Now I am not saying that one, or even several, bottles of this product will hurt you. The likelihood is incredibly slim, and I am in no position to tell you exactly how much Magnesium Sulfate is present. However, I would be a little more cautious about which brand of bottled water you decide to purchase. I know I will be.

I always knew Dasani tasted like plastic and no one would agree with me! Thanks for enlightening me on this and making me feel less crazy!
